To The Board of trustee,

I am Courtney Lord a first year fashion diploma student going into my second year at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design with honors. I already have a certificate for Foundation Visual Arts. I am applying for an scholarship/bursary to have assistance in my education. I would be very appreciative for the assistance so I can purchase supplies such as: fabrics and sewing tools. For instance I am making a skirt with a tweed material that will cost $32/meter, which the high cost of fabric will continue with the more projects I take on. I will not be working this term and am not receiving any other assistance out side of the Student Loan.

This past summer I worked for a jewelry and home decor boutique called Toose’s on Water Street. This work experience was invaluable to me. From working here I have learned many things from having good customer relations to merchandising the store. The most important experience of the summer thought was when I was asked by my boss Pam Vincent to accompany her on a business trip to Las Vegas as her Buyer. From this trip I learned a lot about the fashion and accessory retail world. Like, from making contacts with the many different designers and companies that will be very helpful in future business endeavors. Another important thing I have learned was pricing, for instance; what is the buyer looking for. This will come in useful when I am making my product because now I can better plan my product around what material is practical for the mass culture.

In the summers of 2009-2010 I have also worked at the Sunbury Shore Arts and Nature Centre, where I was an assistant in their children art summer program. There were eight weeks of different themed weeks, which I helped plan and execute. This job was very important to me because I was able to share my love of arts and craft with a younger generations and it was very rewarding when they would come back for the next week and some even the following summer. I was also involved with the CLASS Program (Children Learning at Sunbury Shores) where Sunbury Shore would go into the local schools and run art programs from Kindergarten to grade 12. I helped for 2009/2010 winter season in running programs for kindergarten to grade four. We taught them things from their primary colors to how making a mess with some paint is one great part of making art. I have also done some volunteer work with putting on one day workshops for kids as part of the St. Andrews Youth Community Centre where I would plan and organize an activity for the local kids to make. I find these kinds of experiences for children are crucial to developing their creativity. Out side of my art activities I am very active in sports especially hockey, which now I have a hard time getting founding together to play, but I have played the sport since I was 5 years old.

These experiences have been very useful to me and were great educational experience. They will be very useful in my future plans where I hope to one day work as a fashion designer for a large company/fashion house or to one day open my own Fashion House. I hope to achieve these goals, and your assistance will be greatly appreciated as I continue my Fashion education at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design.

            Sincerely,
Courtney Lord
